Use-by vs best-before: what is the difference?

Use-by is about safety for highly perishable foods. Best-before is mainly about quality. Treating them as the same phrase is a common kitchen error.

Your procedures should state how prepped foods are dated, how long they keep under your storage conditions, and when they are discarded.

On the pass

Staff need labels they can read: product, date, and any shift or user rule you enforce. Ambiguous “Tue” scribbles fail when the week rolls.

Complytio’s prep label tools help print use-by style labels from product shelf-life rules you configure — they do not invent legal dates for manufacturer packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Can software set use-by dates for opened goods?+

You set shelf-life rules based on your risk assessment and supplier guidance. Software applies the rules you configure; it does not replace food law judgement.
